The program offers support to people with mental illness/addictions/intellectual disabilities who are in conflict with the law. It is recovery orientated and follows the principles of psycho-social rehabilitation.
Court Support
General information is provided to the court regarding mental illness, services, and community resources. Staff screen for Mental Health Diversion eligibility and develop Diversion plans in partnership with the justice system. The program also supports clients/families through the court process and staff conducts fitness screenings as appropriate. Dual Diagnosis Justice
Transitional case management, court support and release from custody planning is offered specifically for people with an intellectual disability or dual diagnosis. Release from Custody
This program works closely with the medical unit at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre (ATRC) to provide mental health supports to individuals held in custody. Staff works with the client to develop a discharge plan that includes medication, finances, housing and referral in the community upon discharge. The program also provides supports to reintegrate individuals into the community after a period of incarceration. For more information please call Court Support and Diversion at ext. 225.
Mental Health Court
Sault Community Court is a judicially monitored program with a multidisciplinary team approach to encourage voluntary treatment over punishment in order to address the underlying cause of the criminal conduct. Referrals from police officers, lawyers, service providers, friends, family and self are encouraged. For more information please call Court Support and Diversion at ext. 234.
Court Case Management
Diversion plans are monitored and reports are provided to the court regarding diversion progress and outcomes. Staff provides individualized supports in the community based on the treatment plan, continuously assesses bio psycho-social needs, and links/coordinates services and supports in the community.
