On March 8, CMHA Algoma joins individuals and organizations around the world in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) 2022, an annual event held to mark the social, economic and political achievements of women.
The theme of IWD 2022 is #BreakTheBias, which highlights the need to actively call out gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women. Among other issues, gender bias has a significant negative effect on medical diagnosis and the quality of healthcare women receive, leading to substantial delays in diagnosis and misdiagnosis. This includes delays in receiving mental health care, as research has found that women experience depression and anxiety twice as often as men but experience more barriers in getting care.
CMHA Algoma offers the Central Access and Information service, where you can speak with an Access Worker who will be able to provide you with information and referrals to the mental health and addictions services that are available in the Algoma District.
Show your support by visiting the International Women’s Day website and sharing your actions for equality on social media with the hashtag #BreaktheBias.
